I didn't quite appreciate how much of a Disneyland dreamscape Burano is, that is, until we had set foot on the island. With its colourful walls and picturesque streets, it's no wonder that it has become prime instagram fodder; yet, for all its photogenic appeal, I must admit that none of it truly felt real.

There is no escaping the crowds in Burano, no going off the beaten track. But in defence of this somewhat surreal technicolour isle, whilst the practical reasons for the kaleidoscope of cottages may be long forgotten, there is such an undeniable lightness to a place so bright that it is near impossible not to take a shine to it.

You certainly don't feel relaxed at the end of the day, but then when else can you say you've had a taste of the rainbow?
